Suspend and delete mailboxes

Suspension

Suspension blocks all access methods simultaneously. The panel, IMAP, SMTP and JMAP stop accepting the password, including for sessions already established. Mail continues to be delivered and no data is removed.

Reactivation requires a new password. The previous password is not retained.

Deletion

Deletion suspends the mailbox, releases its address and starts a recovery period of 30 days. No data is destroyed during that period.

The address is reserved for the full period and cannot be assigned to another user, so that mail addressed to the previous holder is not delivered to a new one.

By default the sender receives a non-delivery report indicating that the recipient does not exist. A successor may instead be designated, in which case the address is transferred to that user.

Forwarding is not applied by default and is recorded when configured.

Data export

During the 30-day period the mailbox can be exported as a single mbox file containing every message from every folder in its original form. The format is accepted by standard mail clients.

Export is not available for a mailbox in use. Access to an active mailbox requires the credentials of its owner.

Permanent deletion

After 30 days a scheduled job deletes the mailbox permanently. See “Retention and deletion” for retention periods.
